The Forwards

A no-nonsense look at the pressures of Australian youth culture without glossing over the hard reality

Exciting, relevant, powerful, realistic.

Ferny Grove State High School

Pulling no punches, The Forwards follows three teenage football players through a series of fateful events surrounding the local AFL Premiership final. With a concoction of immature emotions and compromised decisions, the night unfolds amidst drugs, binge drinking, betrayal, DUI and arson. The trouble escalates beyond the teens’ control and becomes their tragic undoing.

Actors Sam Foster, Adam Drake and Sandy Greenwood of Zeal Theatre Qld have extensive experience in exploring delicate youth issues in a dynamic way. Through a carefully balanced mix of comedy and serious drama the play makes its important points. Sam, Adam and Sandy guide a postperformance discussion about the consequences of one’s actions, highlighting social pressures that are a reality for Australia’s youth. This is Zeal Theatre Qld at its very best.

Queensland Arts Council recognises the need to provide schools with opportunities to address serious adolescent issues, such as binge drinking, crime, drugs and the peer pressure that leads to them. This performance is a catalyst for proactive discussion between students and their teachers and guardians.

Performed by Zeal Theatre Qld. Written by multi-award winning playwright Stefo Nantsou.

The performance lasts for 70 minutes, including a 10 minute debrief.
